Aces BJJ News Roundup #18: Five Finger Death Touch BB, Brutal UFC Eye Poke, and 3CG Signs A New Star

You’re in a crowd. Social distancing has finally been lifted, and you’re enjoying a concert, which is off-brand for you! Your friends all wanted something different to celebrate large gatherings being legal, so you figured, “What the heck, let’s go.”

You’re getting caught up in the excitement of it all, the music, the dancing, the anxiety over how bad traffic will be, and it washes away the stink of the extended quarantine. So far, everything is going wonderfully.

But what’s that? A disturbance in the crowd! A fight seems to have broken out between rival fans of the same band for some reason. Things are looking grim as these two non-athletic guys desperately try to claw one-another’s eye’s out. Content to watch, the gathered crowd only cheers them on further.

Like a bolt from the blue, a figure leaps from the stage and joins the conflict. Both men are quickly subdued in a flash of pins and reversals, leaving them neutralized. The mysterious figure stands up.

It’s famed rockstar and martial artist Zoltan Bathory!!!!!!!

Once it’s clear the two are no longer a danger to themselves, the guitarist takes in a deep breath. He pauses as the crowd goes silent. Then, in an instant, he roars:

“WELCOME TO THE ACES BJJ NEWS ROUNDUP!!!!!!!”

Five Finger Death Punch Guitarist Earns Black Belt

Rolling right off our intro theme, one of the hardest rockers in music has received a very prestigious belt promotion. Five Finger Death Punch guitarist and cool-name-haver Zoltan Bathory was given his BJJ black belt by Professor Royler Gracie and Mica Cipili last Saturday. The rockstar, a student under Gracie since 2008, has been training in multiple martial arts disciplines for years. Already a Judo black belt, one has to wonder how he fits so much training in between melting faces on stage.

Not content just to train, Bathory’s competition record includes a silver medal at the Abu Dhabi Pro Jiu-Jitsu World Trials back in 2011 as a white belt and a third-place IBJJF master’s finish at blue in 2012.

With Hatebreed bassist Chris Beatie now a blue belt, here’s hoping we see rock shows include a few gi matches in between sets.

Edwards Vs. Muhammad Ends Via Eye Poke

The much-hyped UFC Vegas 21 match between Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad met an unfortunate conclusion with an eye poke from Edwards. The clear foul turned what looked to be an exciting fight into a no-contest early into the second round.

Edwards kicked round one off with two kicks, followed by a jab-cross, then drove Muhammad to the cage before eating an elbow but didn’t lose a step. After landing a beautiful head kick, Edwards advanced with a pile of strikes before his opponent escaped. The round continued with Edwards dominating outside the clinch, but an accidental eye poke from him would momentarily halt the action. The round ended with a slight advantage to Edwards in the eyes of many spectators.

Round two saw the match draw to its doomed end; however, after Edwards accidentally dug his finger deep into Muhammad’s right eye again. He collapsed to the pain floor. The ref shortly called the fight, as Muhammad was unable to continue.

A tough break, to be sure, and, despite Edward’s passionate claims of wanting to move on, a match worth revisiting soon.

Victor Hugo Joins Third Coast Grappling 6

3CG 6 revealed their final competitor earlier this week for the upcoming event, and boy, is he a doozy!  2019 World No-Gi champ and Third Coast Kumite vet Victor Hugo will be taking the stage for the first 3CG event under Fite TV. No stranger to the Texas heat, Hugo dominated both 3CG: Kumite 2 & 6 last year to win a hefty dragon’s hoard. Not content with one promotion, his recent victories at both F2W and Who’s Number One have caused his stock to rise even further.

With his addition, the full event card reads:

  • Pedro Marinho
  • Mason Fowler
  • William Tackett
  • Kaynan Duarte
  • Manuel Ribamar
  • Victor Hugo
  • Tex Johnson
  • Nicky Rodriguez

Yes, readers, that list has me drooling as well.

That’s it for this week’s news roundup, everyone! Remember, grappling is only the best when you train more than once a month. Peace out, y’all!
